The Political Economy of a Pre-colonial African State: Ibadan, 1830-1900

by Toyin Falola

This book attempts to fill the existing gap in our knowledge of the pre-colonial economy of African societies, particularly the Yoruba. Socio-economic themes have generally been neglected in African studies, which has made it difficult to know in detail the structure of the pre-colonial African economy, the transformation and transmutation of socio-economic institutions, and the factors responsible for these changes. This neglect has allowed for misunderstandings and misrepresentations of the indigenous economy, whereby many scholars and policy makers have argued that the African economy was not diversified, that it operated at a subsistence level, and that it was static. This study thus examines the economy and its interplay with socio-political institutions with particular emphasis on internal dynamics and factors of change.
